Rabbits
Food and drink
Rabbits are natural herbivores!
How do I put together a balanced diet for my rabbit?
Rabbits eat plants. As well as a complete diet, around 20-25 g per kilogram of body weight per day, it's very important that they always have hay to eat too. Hay is easy to digest and rich in fibre. It's also very important for a rabbit to have unlimited fresh water to drink.
A complete dry food is very beneficial because that way the rabbit ingests the right amount of nutrients. Make sure that your rabbit always finishes its bowl of food. Then it will definitely have ingested all the nutrients it needs. The most important nutrients are vitamins, minerals and proteins. \n A rabbit likes a varied diet of fresh vegetables. A daily variety of fresh vegetables is a good addition to their basic diet. The recommendation here is: small amounts but a wide range. Vegetables that are better avoided are onions, leek, cabbage, mushrooms, asparagus and raw potato. Be careful with fruit, this can often contain too much sugar. Of course a small piece per day won't do any harm, but don't go overboard.

Five useful tips!
What should I definitely bear in mind when thinking about buying a rabbit? ?
- No specific experience is required to keep rabbits. Make sure you are well informed. Especially about their dietary patterns.
- Rabbits are social animals. So another rabbit as a companion is recommended. A combination of a castrated male and a female is perfect.
- A varied diet consists mainly of hay, solid food and fresh vegetables. It's important to provide fresh drinking water at all times.
- A healthy rabbit is an active, observant animal that likes to eat and has clean and dry fur. Symptoms of (developing) diseases are lethargy, loss of appetite, dirty eyes, dirty unkempt fur or a change in bowel movements; in this case, consult a vet.
- Provide plenty of space for your rabbit to move around. It likes nothing better than hopping about and exploring the area.

Housing
Inside or outside? Straw or wood shavings?
How do I make my rabbit as comfortable as possible?
It doesn't really matter whether you decide to keep your rabbit inside or outside. Its fur will adapt to the conditions. Just bear in mind that if you keep it outside, it's best to first move it outside during the summer. It's also better not to place the hutch in direct sunlight or in a windy place. Always provide plenty of room for your rabbit to move around, both inside and outside. It should be able to make three big hops lengthways. Of course the space can always be larger. You can also happily allow a rabbit to run around inside the house. It will enjoy exploring the whole room.
To cover the ground, you can choose compacted wood pellets, straw, wood shavings or hay. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, we think a good mix of these is the best possible choice. So choose straw and pellets in your rabbit's living, playing and sleeping area. Wood shavings are suitable for the toilet area and hay is better around the food bowl.

For the professionals!
Ambition to breed?
Are you already familiar with breeding rabbits?
A litter of rabbits can be wonderful, but make sure you have plenty of new homes for them in advance. They can have up to ten young and rabbit rescues are often full of unwanted rabbits. Of course you will want all your animals to go to a good home. Rabbits have a gestation period of about four weeks, after which the young are born bald, blind and deaf. Leave them alone for the first ten days, otherwise the mother rabbit may become stressed. After this they should be regularly stroked and picked up so that they become used to human hands. At the age of eight weeks they are independent and can be moved to a new home.
